Rumi quote

Load the ship and set out. No one knows for certain whether the vessel will sink or reach the harbor. Cautious people say, "I'll do nothing until I can be sure". Merchants know better. If you do nothing, you lose. Don't be one of those merchants who wont risk the ocean. - Rumi

Arriving in Boerne, Texas Jan 2008

Getting settled in Boerne

Hi!!!

Well, it looks as if it's been about 10 days since I arrived in Texas, and I have to say, I really love it here. There were 2 or 3 days of culture shock, I admit. Here in Boerne, it feels as if we are a hundred miles from anything. Things are much more spread out, not at all "on top" of each other -- houses come with land - usually lots of it! - and instead of a store or restaurant being right down the block, it's one or two exits off the freeway. Northwest San Antonio, however, is just a 10 minute drive, offering every type of store or restaurant ('bright lights, big city") you can imagine. We really do enjoy the best of both worlds here - country and city - all at our fingertips.

There is a porch swing in the back yard where I spend a good deal of time relaxing and breathing in the fresh Texas air.... missing my friends and family and especially, missing Paige... At the same time, I'm also very grateful for the feeling of comfortability here, kind of like a feeling of being "home" already, and a certainty that I've landed myself in just the right place. And my roomates - my friend Susan, her son Ryan, and my new pal Michelle - they make the journey fun and full of laughter, and I love them for it.

Hope you are all doing wonderfully... I think of you all, especially when I am sitting on that back porch swing, counting my blessings.... Smiles and please keep in touch! Rhonda

First Day in Boerne

Hi :))) (scroll down for new pictures of downtown Boerne)

Hope you are all doing well and enjoying the beautiful California weather! It was a nice sunny day here today, but a bit cooler than I'm used to - 50 degrees. Susan's son, Ryan, took me downtown today and showed me around a bit. It's really adorable! The buildings are old, but well cared for, and I'm told San Antonians like to come visit Boerne for the antique shopping (lots of great antique stores!).

Just outside of the main strip runs the Cibolo River - it's beautiful, and I think may be a great place for taking walks. Ryan says it's okay to walk barefoot through the river, but if I see a black snake swimming nearby I should run, and fast!

I hope you are all doing wonderful and thanks for sharing this trip with me. I'll put some more pictures up next week, after I've had a chance to get acclimated a bit. Hugs and Smiles, Rhonda

Driving into Texas

Wed Jan 2

Good Morning :))
Yesterday was a smooth travel day, but not much to report. Miles of open road through Arizona, New Mexico and Texas with Lyle Lovett, Billy Joel and Tracy Chapman. There were high winds, but not a lot of travelers outside of the trucks on the road, and tumbleweeds jumping up randomly trying to eat my Corolla. I was overjoyed to discover Love's Gas station just west of the Texas border - the first shiny clean gas station with real coffee since California!!!

I'm excited about today - I should make it to Susan's house about 3 or 4 this afternoon. We'll drive around Boerne a bit, then go out to dinner. And I can't wait to meet her roommate Michelle - or , I mean, my new roomate :) - and get reaquainted with Susan's 27 year old adorable son Ryan.

I probably won't write anymore today...it's been years since I've seen Susan and something tells me it will be on of those nights where the girl's talk never ends. But I will take lots of pictures of the crew, and tell you all about Boerne tomorrow. Maybe by then I'll have seen San Antonio, also and have some great pics of the city for you. Lots of love, Rhonda (PS i miss you all)
